"Thank you for your patience". This is something I hear at work almost three to four times a day when dealing with people. I don't usually think too much of it because I have always been a calm person and don't get angry or upset at the little things but sometimes I wonder to myself why I'm so patient and why others are not. Patience as defined in the dictionary is "the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset". I think a lot of us underestimate the importance of patience when it comes to not just dealing with people but how important it is in our self development. Life is often hard and in most instances it is hard to be patient when the struggles we're going through and dealing with in life never stop but these times are the most important times to practice patience.
We have to be comfortable in accepting the things we can't change and just leave them to be. We often get impatient when things don't go our way. Some examples may be getting stuck in traffic, car problems, situations not going as planned and people not doing what they're supposed to. I am a very patient person for the most part but there are times when my impatience in waiting comes back to bite me. A perfect example is a shoe I had been eyeing since December. I wanted the shoe really bad that I was always checking to get information on it and to see if it would possibly drop. I got lucky a couple months later and was able to catch a limited drop of the shoe before the worldwide release for $20 over the normal price.
I didn't think much of it and was just excited to get the shoe but what is crazy was a month after I bought the shoe there was the worldwide release with more pairs available and I guess it wasn't as limited as I thought it would be. I didn't make too much of it again since I had a pair but eventually it went on sale for $50 less than what I paid for it. This may not be the best example but had I being patient and waited for the worldwide drop of the shoe I would have saved over $50. My inability to be patient cost me money I could have used on something else. We have to be able to surrender the feeling of wanting control of everything. Another aspect of patience is accepting circumstances without getting upset or angry whether it is dealing with others or our problems.
We have the option to choose not to be upset and give people the benefit of the doubt because like I said in my last post everyone is trying the best they can. No one has it all together and we're all navigating this journey called life. We have to try our best to understand others and put ourselves in the shoes of others even if we may not know them personally. Some benefits of patience are a healthier attitude, improvement of relationships and friendships, and overall a positive mindset. We have to be able to slow down, be patient and live and enjoy the moments in front of us. We have to think on what's good and don't worry about everything else because continuing to be impatient in the long run will do more harm than good. We don't have to be in a rush for everything but instead there are times to just let things flow and happen naturally.
This post was inspired by this article I found on patience. Really good read. Check it out https://columbiametro.com/article/the-skill-of-patience/#:~:text=Patience%20improves%20your%20ability%20to,a%20greater%20sense%20of%20gratitude.
