The ancient philosophy of stoicism is one that is prominent today. All around the world, there are individuals practicing it in their daily lives as a way to better themselves. A stoic is someone who practices strength, hope and comfort in times of hardship. To a stoic, there are things in the world that are in our control and the ones that are not. The main goal of stoicism is to focus on things that are in our control and not to worry about the ones that are not. A stoic doesn't worry or stress about anything in the world because they have a love of faith.
What has happened or is happening is meant to and with resilience and strength, they can always endure. This is something I have been practicing for 2 years now and it has changed my life. I don't worry about things and even though some say a stoic hides their emotion, it is the complete opposite. Another main aspect is being in control of our emotions instead of letting it control us. One of the pioneers and teachers of Stoicism is the emperor Marcus Aurelius. Some of you might have heard of him from ancient movies and others but he is more than that. One of his greatest stoic practices was Journaling. He would write his thoughts down each day on how he felt, how his day was and the various things that had happened.
All his journals have been preserved in history and are put in a book called Meditations. This inspired me to start practicing Journaling and it has made a positive impact on my life. In Meditations, Marcus an emperor at the time gives us information on his life, his practices, and his struggles with war and the plague during his reign. Meditations is honestly full of too much wisdom that I almost have the whole book highlighted. One important quote is "You could leave life right now, Let that determine what you say and think".
This is interesting because stoicism places an emphasis on death and how we're all going to die one day no matter how much we try to avoid thinking about it. We have to be constantly aware of the life we live and what kind of impact we're having on those around us. I could go on for days when it comes to analyzing this book down but you should read it yourself. I will link places to find the book for anyone interested. Start Journaling today. Reflect on your day, write your thoughts or just anything you want to talk about but not with anyone else. You will reap the benefits and see how much of an impact it will have on your life.
