One year without Social Media and Why I'm not going back

So today makes it a year since I graduated college and also a year since I left social media and I kind of want to give a brief overview of why I made that decision and why I don’t plan on going back. Starting after my first year of college, I took the whole summer off social media to really focus on myself and work on myself before the beginning of my second year and that time off paid dividends. This was a big step for me because before that I was the usual always posting on all social media and just making my plans known but there is a point in which we sometimes get lost in that.

We may not fully admit it but social media dictates a lot of what we do, where we go to eat because we want to post it, or just overall our daily lives are impacted by social media because we want to post it to make an impression on people and put this false image out there. It was something I knew I felt during those times and after being off for that summer I came in with a different mindset. Everything I posted on there was for me and not for anyone else. I posted pictures because I wanted to, not because I wanted others to see a specific side of me. That mindset helped me out a lot and also led way to me taking a couple breaks to where I’ll be on for let’s say 3 months and then go off for another 3 months.

This really benefited me as a person and helped me find myself and also led to me not looking for outside approval and putting myself first. Doing all this led to the point of me not feeling like I needed it anymore and every-time I came back it was like I never left because people were still doing the same things or were living the same lives they were before I went off. I made the decision that after college I would go off completely and the day I graduated December 10th 2021 was my last day on all my social media accounts. I haven’t deleted any of my accounts and only use YouTube and Pinterest but I don’t really consider them social media since there is not really that much communication involved if not needed. One year without it and I will never go back.

Personally I feel like I’m past that point of wanting or needing to post what I’m doing. I’m in contact with the friends I have that matter and everyone else who needs to contact me would have had my phone number if I felt they needed to stay in my life. I have never felt like I’m missing out on anything and don’t think I ever will. Not being on social media has also helped me be more productive and focus on things that matter. I'm able to manage my time better and not spend time scrolling left and right. This is just my personal experience and I know for others it may be hard to let something like that go but honestly to each their own.
