The American Dream is Overrated

Lately I have been thinking about how much we put into our jobs and just how most of our days are a cycle. We wake up, go to work, come home, rest and do it all over again. In the United States most people are chasing the American Dream, the whole go to college or if not just get a job, make money, buy the nice house, car etc and basically that’s it. The American Dream is what everyone wants to achieve and honestly there is more to life than it. I love my job and love everything about where I am now but personally I’m not chasing after the American Dream. My end goal is not the nicest house, car etc. There is more to life than that and for me going to Africa this past summer really opened my eyes on that aspect.

People in Africa are working but they don’t chase after the nicest house, the cars, etc. Some of them walk around with nothing but walk around with a purpose and walk like they know where they’re going with their heads up. They are happy with what little they have. On the other hand, there are people here in the United States with everything and are miserable and a lot commit suicide because they don’t have peace. You can’t put a price on happiness and peace and people don’t get that. There is no point in obtaining all these things if deep inside you’re still struggling day by day.

Me personally I don’t want to grow old and be a slave to working. I want to cherish the most important things like family, friends and others and the price of that is worth more than money. It’s nice to achieve the American dream and for all the ones who want to achieve that there’s nothing wrong with it but don’t sacrifice your life, happiness, health and peace for it because you can’t put a price on that. It’s okay to want to work hard to make a living and I think all should but the job you have should not define you as a person. You are more than the job you do, the car you have, the nice house or how much money you have. Identity is found in the kind of person you are and overall how much impact you have on others
