The Process Of Getting There Is Way More Fun Than Getting There

I was recently revisiting a song by rapper Russ called line em up and forgot how much the song spoke to me. I heard this song in 2020 and it feels like it has been forever since I heard it again but I guess that is the beauty of timeless music. No matter how long ago it has been since it was heard, the feeling is still the same.

In one of the verses he says "I climbed the mountain fast and all I found was just a cliff, The lesson there is getting there is way more fun than getting there". In the verse before he talks about people talking about money coming in waves but they said he drowned at 23 and he has been drowning ever since. There is a lot to break down in the song in general but I want to focus on one aspect, "The lesson there is getting there is way more fun than getting there".

What he is trying to explain is a lot of times the creativity and process of getting to the destination is more fulfilling then when you get there. The sacrifice, hard work and sweat and tears is more fun. A lot of times we don't know what's next after getting there. A good example was me in college. I started at a community college and then transferred to Texas Tech University. While at it I changed my major around 3 times until I was able to finally figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

The funny thing is even if some of those times were confusing and I didn't know exactly what direction I wanted to go in my life, it was still fun. The whole process of searching for purpose and creating something out of nothing was fulfilling. During the final year and when I got to the finish line, I was like well this is it. Even though I knew my hard work had paid off and I was finally going to walk the stage, I had lost all my drive but I guess it makes sense. I had worked really hard so when I got there it didn't feel the same.

What Russ is saying with those lyrics is he had the drive when he wasn't known in the rap game and enjoyed the process of getting to the top. Now that he has made it with the fame, the money or all the others that come with it, he still feels like there should be more. Even though his life has fully changed, he is still figuring out what is next. He felt like there will be more than this but I guess that is what he means by the lesson there is getting there is way more fun than getting there.

I also recently saw a millionaire talk about selling his tech company for millions and still being depressed. He was talking about his goals of always wanting to be successful in everything he did and being able to get everything he wanted but now he has it, he fells depressed. He sold his tech company for millions and didn't feel the same after seeing the deposit.

To him it's like what's next? He thought getting to this point will satisfy him and make him happy in a way he wasn't before but that wasn't the case. He explained that what kept him going and made him enjoy the process was being able to create. The process of creating something out of nothing and also figuring out where to go was more fun than actually finishing it. This may not be the same for everyone but what this made me realize is sometimes the feeling we strive for or where we strive to be is not what we think. We may get to that point and still feel the same and wonder what else is next.
